Beroro Efekoro, a Nigerian-born U.S. legislator representing Albany County's 7th District in New York, has condemned the salaries and allowances of Nigeria's National Assembly members as excessive. In a statement released in New York on Thursday, Efekoro reacted to the controversy surrounding these payments, which gained attention following claims that National Assembly members had set their own salaries during a visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Despite a recent denial from the Senate, which claimed that members do not set their own salaries, the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission revealed that each Senator receives a monthly salary and allowances totaling N1.063 million. Efekoro dismissed this explanation as mere formality, asserting that the figures provided do not reflect the true extent of the compensation.
Efekoro, emphasizing that Nigerians have not forgotten the financial burdens imposed on them, called for support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration to tackle the country’s issues. He also cautioned Senate President Godswill Akpabio against intimidating senators who seek to hold the president accountable.
While Efekoro expressed continued faith in Tinubu’s administration, he urged transparency regarding the savings from subsidy removal and how those funds are being used. He stressed the need for a clear economic plan and greater public involvement to prevent potential unrest.
