Federal Government Targets 6000 Megawatts of Power by Year-End

The Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu, has announced that the federal government aims to generate at least 6000 megawatts of power by the end of the year.

During a visit to the Calabar Power Plant of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, Adelabu outlined the progress made in power generation. He highlighted that under President Bola Tinubu's administration, power output had risen from below 3,000 megawatts last year to a more stable supply.

The Calabar power plant, which was established about 15 years ago with a capacity of 625 megawatts, had been underutilized. Currently, the plant's five turbines include three that are generating power efficiently, while two are undergoing maintenance. Adelabu noted that the plant alone could produce over 500 megawatts once fully operational.

The minister emphasized ongoing reforms in the power sector aimed at ensuring a stable power supply across the country. With increasing energy demands, the government is committed to meeting these needs and enhancing sector efficiency.

He urged stakeholders in the oil and gas sector to remain proactive, stressing that the federal government is committed to transforming the power sector for better generation and distribution.

Adelabu also mentioned the potential privatization of the Calabar Power Plant to the Cross River State Government, which is currently under consideration by the Federal Privatization Council and Federal Executive Council. Cross River’s Commissioner for Power and Energy, Prince Eka Williams, expressed readiness to manage the plant effectively, citing the state's expertise.

Chiedu Ugbo, the plant’s managing director, confirmed that the plant is currently supplying power to the South South and South East regions, but emphasized the need for additional sub-transmission power stations to improve distribution.
